The principal (nonnegative) square root of x is the number r such that r² = x and r ≥ 0. For every positive x there is also a negative root (−r); geometry and most calculators report the principal value by convention.

Principal square root

144 =

12

Check

(12)² ≈ 144

Floating-point math can show tiny trailing digits; ±0 differences are numerical noise when x matches r² closely.

Algebra note

Equations such as x² = a admit two solutions when a > 0: ±12.

When √x shows up

Square roots appear in geometry (diagonal of a square, hypotenuse steps), RMS averages, quadratic formulas, and converting area back to edge length when models assume proportional growth. Reporting the principal root keeps answers consistent with calculators and textbook radical notation.

Definition this tool uses

For x ≥ 0, √x is the unique r ≥ 0 with r² = x. That is the same as the real power x1/2 for nonnegative x.

Frequently asked questions

What is a principal square root?

It is the nonnegative solution r to r² = x when x is nonnegative. That is the value standard math software and the radical symbol refer to by default.

Can you take the square root of a negative number?

Not as a real number. This tool asks for x ≥ 0; complex square roots use a different branch cut and are outside the scope of this page.

Is the square root of x the same as x to the one-half power?

For nonnegative x, yes—the principal root matches x^(1/2) in real arithmetic.

Why does solving x squared equals nine give plus or minus three?

Both 3 and −3 square to 9. The expression √9 still means 3 (principal). When you solve x² = 9, list both ±3 unless context forbids the negative root.

Is my number sent to Toolsle servers?

No. The math runs in your browser only; we do not receive your input just from using this calculator.
