Free birth chart calculator (natal chart basics)

This calculator turns your birth date, local time, UTC offset, and birth-place coordinates into the three most-requested placements in modern Western astrology: your Sun sign, Moon sign, and rising sign (Ascendant). The math uses real solar and lunar ecliptic longitudes plus the ecliptic intersection with your eastern horizon—so you get consistent, astronomy-backed tropical signs rather than a random quiz.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need for a birth chart?
Enter your birth date, the local time on the clock where you were born, the UTC offset for that place (accounting for standard or daylight saving time), and latitude and longitude of your birth location. Latitude and longitude set the rising sign (Ascendant).
Is this tropical or sidereal astrology?
This tool uses the tropical zodiac (0° Aries aligned with the March equinox), which is standard in most Western astrology. It is not the sidereal (constellation-based) zodiac used in many Vedic traditions.
How accurate is the rising sign?
Rising sign uses standard astronomical formulas for local sidereal time, obliquity of the ecliptic, and geographic latitude. For edge cases near sign boundaries, small differences vs. professional software can still occur due to atmospheric refraction and house-system choices. Use exact birth time and coordinates.
What is the difference between Sun sign, Moon sign, and rising (Ascendant)?
Your Sun sign reflects the zodiac position of the Sun at your birth (popular “star sign”). Your Moon sign is where the Moon was along the ecliptic—often associated with emotional tone and instinct. Your rising sign is whichever zodiac was on the eastern horizon at that moment and depends strongly on birth time and place; it colors “first impression” and chart orientation in whole-sign-style readings.
Why do birth time and birth city change my rising sign?
The Ascendant is tied to Earth’s rotation. A different clock time rotates the sky; a different longitude shifts local sidereal time. Even 10–20 minutes near a sign boundary can change the rising sign, which is why hospitals note birth time on records.
What if I don't know my exact birth time?
You can still see Sun and Moon signs from date, offset, and a rough time if the Moon did not change signs that day. Without a reliable birth time, treat the rising sign as unknown—try noon local time only as a rough preview, or check a birth certificate or hospital record for an exact time.
Is the birth chart calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no signup, no payment, and your birth data is not sent to a server. Results are for education and curiosity, not a substitute for professional astrological, medical, legal, or financial advice.

How to use it

  1. Choose your birth date and the local birth time as shown on the clock where you were born.
  2. Select the correct UTC offset for that moment (remember daylight saving). Examples: Eastern Standard is UTC−05:00; India Standard is UTC+05:30.
  3. Enter latitude and longitude (east longitude positive) or pick a preset city to fill them in.
  4. Click Calculate birth chart to see Sun, Moon, and rising signs with degrees.

What we do not include (yet)

Full natal charts also use the other planets, aspects, and house systems. This tool focuses on the Big Three placements and is meant as a fast, educational starting point—always fun to cross-check near sign boundaries with your favorite professional software or astrologer.
